Pennies for Boys & Girls

Pennies for Boys & Girls

Decades of pinching pennies will now benefit the many children who attend the Lewistown Boys and Girls Club.

Daryll Lundgren recently donated 125 pounds of pennies to the local Club. He said the donation was the idea of the woman he was married to for 54 wonderful years – his late wife Mary who passed away on Aug. 3.

Darryl and Mary met in 1957, when they were both working at Gamers Confectionary in Butte. They fell in love and were married two years later. Together they owned and operated businesses all across the state, one of which was the Cookie Jar on Main Street in Lewistown in the early 1990s. No matter where they were, Mary always saved the pennies, hoping one day they would go to a good cause.

Earlier this year, after Mary had been battling illness for many months, Darryl asked his wife what she would like to do with the pennies when she is gone. Mary wanted them to go to the Boys and Girls Club.

On Monday of this week, her wish was carried out. The pennies were delivered to the bank and a check was deposited in the Boys and Girls Club’s permanent endowment, so that Mary’s gift will benefit local children for years to come.
